The Week in Review

This week I caught my cat Millie in the catnip again. She's an addict.

Staff writer Ashley Wallace reviews her week and gives her recommendations that have emerged from it.

This week I ate… seafood delivered by Yellow Brick Road. The sustainable seafood business is now delivering fresh fish and shellfish to your door, arriving within 24-36 hours of leaving the boat. We had Bluff oysters, snapper and crayfish tails and they were sensational.

I used… my hair straightener for the first time in six weeks. It’s a Remington Smooth Finish Ceramic that I bought on sale for $15 in 2015 that’s still going strong. It does a great job at taming my hair, which is best described as ‘Hagrid’. Also, upon noticing my eyebrows had faded into oblivion, I used my e.l.f. Eyebrow Kit, which retails for around $9-$11. Before lockdown I used it every day, I bought it at the start of 2017, and I’m still not halfway through it. Two budget beauty buys that I highly recommend.

I watched… the latest episode of Killing Eve. Perhaps more people are meeting gruesome ends than is necessary, including some beloved characters – but lord knows we’re not tuning in with the hope of a happy ending. And oh, how I love this dress:

Also, in preparation for a Facebook Live interview on Sunday with MiNDFOOD’s coronavirus diarist Simone Nathan, I re-watched her hilarious web series Mum! and Mom!where funny people impersonate their funny mothers. You’ll spot some familiar faces from the Kiwi comedy scene in there, including Chris Parker and Paul Williams.

I read… my great-grandfather’s autobiography. It’s called Packsaddle to Rolls-Royce. Wonder where that Rolls-Royce is now? Wish the fam had kept it for me. I could review the book for you, but you’d be hard-pressed to get your hands on a copy. It’s been fascinating to learn a bit of family history though.

I cooked… MiNDFOOD’s Caramelised Onion, Leek & Persian Feta Frittata for dinner (controversial). Truly delicious and totally worth the house smelling like onions for the next day.

I laughed at… my cats’ cameos on Zoom. And yes, it is absolutely necessary to have multiple cat images in this post.

I discovered… the amazing crystal artwork of Sara Shakeel. This work featuring Lizzo is iconic!

I learnt… to enquire about the state of my gran’s liquor cabinet more regularly. I received a call from her this week, thinking she wanted to catch up. No. “Where’s your father?” she asked. “I’ve been trying to get hold of him.” I put my dad on the phone. “I’ve run out of whisky,” she said. My dad told her he would buy some more. “When do you need it?” he said. “Right now!” was the reply. So my dad took an hour out of his work day to make a mad dash to the shops and deliver multiple bottles of whisky to her retirement home. While caring for your elderly relatives in lockdown, don’t forget their essential supplies.

And what do I wish I had learnt this week? How to pronounce X Æ A-12. It turns out Elon and Grimes don’t even know yet, so I’ll keep waiting patiently for a tutorial.
