Queen Elizabeth II attended a decommissioning ceremony in Plymouth, Devon to pay tribute to the Royal Navy’s largest operational warship. HMS Ocean, known as the Mighty O, has been sold to the Brazilian navy for £84 million. The warship was recently used to aid humanitarian efforts in the Caribbean following hurricanes Irma and Maria.

Her Majesty was welcomed by local school children before being greeted at Devonport Naval Base with a 21-gun salute. After inspecting the Royal Guard of Honour, she attended the decommissioning ceremony as its guest of honour alongside the head of the Navy, First Sea Lord Admiral Sir Philip Jones and over 500 of the ship’s staff and their family members.

The Queen then addressed the crowd in her capacity as the Royal Navy’s HMS Ocean’s Lady Sponsor. “With three generations of naval officers in my family, I recognise the significant demands that have been placed on all those who have served in the Ship over the last two decades, as well as the contribution of their families and loved ones”, she said.
