The Queen hands over the baton for Commonwealth Games global relay
The ceremony signals the beginning of the 2022 Commonwealth Games global relay, which will end in Birmingham next year.

The Queen has handed over the baton, marking the start of a 294-day journey through the 72 Commonwealth nations and territories, before the games begin in Birmingham in July 2022.

The monarch donned a bright orange outfit and matching hat for the ceremony, which took place at Buckingham Palace. It was her first major event at the palace since the beginning of the pandemic, and she was joined by The Earl of Wessex, Prince Edward.

The Queen passed the baton to Paralympic gold medallist Kadeena Cox, which will be taken to Cyprus for its next stop.

With the baton came a special message from the 95-year-old monarch, which will be read at the Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony, taking place in the same year as her Platinum Jubilee.

A piece of platinum has also been incorporated into the baton in recognition of the Jubilee, which marks the Queen’s 70-year reign. It also comes with some high-tech gadgetry, with built-in 360-degree camera, heart rate monitor and LED lights.

The 2022 Commonwealth Games will take place from 28 July to 8 August next year in Birmingham and across the West Midlands.

After Cyprus, the Baton will journey to Africa, Asia, Oceania, the Caribbean and the Americas. The baton is expected to arrive in New Zealand and Australia around March 2022.
