2020 has been a make or break year for celebrity couples, with lockdowns testing the limits of relationships.

We look at the biggest love stories and break-ups for stars during the year.

WEDDINGS

Princess Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi

Britain’s Princess Beatrice, the eldest daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah, the Duchess of York, married British property developer Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi in Windsor on July 17, in a small, COVID-19 secure ceremony attended by Queen Elizabeth at The Royal Chapel of All Saints at Royal Lodge, Windsor. The couple originally planned to marry in May, but the coronavirus lockdown forced them to reschedule.

Lily Allen and David Harbour

Singer Lily Allen and Stranger Things actor David Harbour tied the knot in a Las Vegas wedding ceremony this year, officiated by an Elvis Presley impersonator. The couple announced the news on Instagram, sharing photos of themselves and the officiator. “In a wedding officiated by the king himself, the people’s princess wed her devoted, low born, but kind credit card holder in a beautiful ceremony lit by the ashen skies courtesy of a burning state miles away in the midst of a global pandemic,” Harbour wrote. The couple were first seen together in August 2019, publicly sharing their relationship two months later. Allen has two daughters from her previous marriage to Sam Cooper.

Emma Stone and Dave McCary

Celebrity news magazine People reported in September that actress Emma Stone and partner Dave McCary got married earlier this year. The couple were first rumoured to have secretly wed when they were spotted earlier that month wearing gold wedding bands. Stone met McCary, a segment director on Saturday Night Live, when she was hosting the show in 2016.

Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost

Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson married “Saturday Night Live” writer and comedian Colin Jost in a low-key ceremony. Charity Meals on Wheels announced the news on October 29, and it was later confirmed by the actress’ representative. The couple started dating about three years ago and got engaged in May 2019. It is the first marriage for Jost, 38, and the third for Johansson, 35, who was previously married to actor Ryan Reynolds and French businessman Romain Dauriac, with whom she has a daughter.

ENGAGEMENTS

Jenna Dewan and Steve Kazee

It has been a busy year for acting couple Jenna Dewan and Steve Kazee. In February, the dancer and actress announced on social media that she and Tony-winning Kazee were engaged and three weeks later on March 6, Dewan gave birth to son, Callum Michael Rebel Kazee. The couple both shared photos of their baby on Instagram to announce the news. Dewan divorced ex-husband, actor Channing Tatum in early 2018. Media first reported she and Tony-winner Kazee began dating in October that year.

Brooklyn Beckham and Nicola Peltz

Brooklyn Beckham, the eldest child of David and Victoria Beckham announced in July he is going to marry his “soulmate” Nicola Peltz, saying he is “the luckiest man in the world”. In a post on his Instagram account Brooklyn, who has worked as a model and photographer, shared a picture of him and actress Peltz, with an accompanying message, reading: “Two weeks ago I asked my soulmate to marry me and she said yes… I promise to be the best husband and the best daddy one day”. Brooklyn, 21, and Peltz, 25, reportedly began dating at the end of 2019 and since, Brooklyn has posted several pictures of them together on Instagram.

Liam Payne and Maya Henry

In August, a British tabloid reported former One Direction member Liam Payne had proposed to American model Maya Henry during lockdown with a £3 million ring. The “Strip That Down” singer confirmed they were “just really happy” during an appearance on television show Good Morning America in September. Payne, 27, and Henry, 20, have been dating for around two years. The British singer-songwriter has a son, Bear with former partner, singer and “X Factor” judge Cheryl Tweedy.

Lily Collins and Charlie McDowell

On September 25, Netflix’s Emily in Paris star Lily Collins announced she was engaged to writer-director boyfriend Charlie McDowell. Both hailing from famous families, Collins is the daughter of musician Phil Collins and McDowell’s parents are actor Malcolm McDowell and Academy award winner Mary Steenburgen. The couple first sparked dating rumours in July 2019. Collins, 31, shared a photo of her smiling wearing an engagement ring, saying it was the “purest joy” she had ever felt.

Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton

Gwen Stefani thrilled fans of The Voice by announcing she and boyfriend Blake Shelton were engaged on October 27. Stefani, 51, shared a photo of the couple kissing showing her engagement ring on Instagram with the caption “yes please”. The singers have been together since 2015 when they met as judges on the singing contest television show and have since collaborated on multiple duets. It will be the second marriage for Stefani who divorced husband of 14 years, Gavin Rossdale in 2016, and third marriage for Shelton who was married to fellow country singer Miranda Lambert from 2011 to 2015.

Enrique Iglesias and Anna Kournikova

Famously private couple Enrique Iglesias and Anna Kournikova became parents for the third time on January 30 this year. The “Bailamos” and “Hero” singer shared a photo of him in a hospital gown holding newborn daughter, Mary, in February. Russian former professional tennis player Kournikova and Iglesias are also parents to twins Nicholas and Lucy, born in 2017.

Elon Musk and Grimes

CEO of SpaceX Elon Musk, and Canadian musician Grimes welcomed a son on May 4. His name was the subject of much debate after Grimes announced on Twitter that it was “X Æ A-12”. This name was deemed illegal under Californian law and it was changed to “X Æ A-Xii”. However, as Æ is not a letter in the modern English alphabet the couple eventually settled on “X AE A-XII” for their child. Musk and Grimes revealed they had begun dating in May 2018 and Grimes announced her pregnancy on January 8 this year.

Ciara and Russell Wilson

American singer Ciara and American football’s Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson welcomed their second child, a son, on July 23. Ciara, 34, shared her baby’s name – “Win” – on Instagram. The couple have been married since 2016 and have a daughter, Sienna, born in 2017. Ciara also has a 6-year-old son from her previous relationship with American rapper Future.

Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas

Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner and Jonas Brothers singer Joe Jonas welcomed the arrival of a baby girl in July. Turner and Jonas married in May 2019 and have adopted a low-key public profile. Celebrity website TMZ.com said the baby girl was named Willa and was born in a Los Angeles hospital on July 22.

Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel

Actress Jessica Biel reportedly gave birth to her and husband Justin Timberlake’s second child in July. The news, which Timberlake’s former NSYNC bandmate Lance Bass shared with Entertainment Tonight, is yet to be confirmed by the couple and Bass refused to reveal a name. Biel and Timberlake married on October 19, 2012 and are also parents to 5-year-old son, Silas.

Ed Sheeran and Cherry Seaborn

On September 1, Ed Sheeran announced on social media that his wife, Cherry Seaborn had given birth to the couple’s first child, a girl who they had named “Lyra Antarctica Seaborn Sheeran”. The singer said Lyra had been born a week prior and “both mum and baby are doing amazing” and that they were “on cloud nine”. Sheeran married childhood school friend Cherry Seaborn in January 2019, according to the video for his song “Put It All On Me”. Lyra is the name of the protagonist in Philip Pullman’s “His Dark Materials”, a trilogy that Sheeran choose as his book he would take with him on a desert island on the BBC radio programme “Desert Island Discs” in 2017.

Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom

Singer Katy Perry and fiance, actor Orlando Bloom, welcomed their daughter Daisy Dove Bloom in August. The couple announced the news on August 27 via a statement on the UNICEF website, which Bloom and Perry shared on social media. In the statement the couple appealed to fans to donate to the page set up to celebrate their daughter’s arrival. The couple started dating in 2016, but split for a time before getting back together. They first hinted they were engaged in February 2019, sharing a photo which featured the singer wearing a diamond ring for Valentine’s Day.

Chris Pratt and Katherine Schwarzenegger

Avengers and Jurassic World star Chris Pratt and wife, author Katherine Schwarzenegger introduced their daughter to the world in August, announcing the news of her birth with a photo of her hand. The couple said they felt “extremely blessed” to welcome Lyla Maria. This is the first baby for Pratt and Schwarzenegger who wed in June 2019 after roughly a year of dating. Pratt has a son, Jack, from his previous marriage to actress Anna Faris.

Mindy Kaling

Mindy Kaling gave birth to her second child, a son called Spencer, on September 3, the actress and writer announced on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Kaling managed to keep her pregnancy a secret as all her work was on Zoom. Kaling gave birth to her daughter, Katherine, in 2017. The identity of either of her children’s biological father has never been disclosed.

Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik

On September 24, model Gigi Hadid and singer Zayn Malik announced they had welcomed a baby girl into the world. Hadid and Malik posted the news on their respective Instagram accounts, each with a black-and-white photograph of the infant’s hand in theirs. Hadid said their daughter had already “changed our world”. Hadid and Malik started dating in late 2015. They appeared together in Malik’s romantic “Pillowtalk” music video in 2016 and at the Met Gala in New York but announced in 2018 that they had split up. The couple are yet to publicly reveal the baby’s name.

Amanda Seyfried and Thomas Sadoski

Media reports began circulating that Amanda Seyfried and husband Thomas Sadoski had welcomed their second child, a son, in September. The couple confirmed the news via INARA and War Child USA at the end of the month. The Mamma Mia actress and The Newsroom actor got married in 2017 and are already parents to Nina, age 3.

Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara

In September, director Victor Kossakovy reported that Joker actor Joaquin Phoenix, with whom he had been working on Gunda, and fiancée Rooney Mara had welcomed a baby boy. Kossakovy also shared that the couple named the baby after Phoenix’s late actor brother River who died in 1993. In November, Phoenix confirmed he had become a father. The couple first met on the set of Spike Jonze’s film Her, but only began dating after appearing in Mary Magdalene in 2018. In the film Mara plays the title role opposite Phoenix as Jesus.

Nicki Minaj and Kenneth Petty

In July, rapper Nicki Minaj shared on Instagram that she was expecting her first child, captioning a photo of her cradling her bump with the comment “#Preggers”. According to media reports, Minaj and husband Kenneth Petty welcomed a baby in September. On the couple’s first wedding anniversary, on October 21, Minaj shared a photo of their newborn’s foot, both marking the occasion and confirming the birth.

SPLITS

Armie Hammer and Elizabeth Chambers

In July, actor Armie Hammer announced on Instagram that he and his wife Elizabeth Chambers had decided to split after “thirteen years as best friends, soulmates, partners and then parents”. He asked for privacy at the time but insisted they would remain “dear friends” and their priority was co-parenting their two children.

Cardi B and Offset

American rapper Cardi B filed for divorce from her husband, rapper Offset on September 15 after three years of their on-and-off marriage. However, around a month later media reports announced that the former stripper had called off the divorce and the couple had reconciled. Cardi B, whose real name is Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar, and Offset of hip-hop trio Migos, whose real name is Kiari Kendrell Cephus, married secretly in 2017. They have a daughter, Kulture, born in 2018. The couple’s relationship has been tumultuous, with splits and rumours of infidelity throughout. They previously parted ways in 2018, only to reunite later.

Olivia Wilde and Jason Sudeikis

News broke on November 13 that actress and director Olivia Wilde and Saturday Night Live veteran Jason Sudeikis had called off their seven-year engagement earlier this year. Wilde and Sudeikis are parents to son Otis, 6, and daughter Daisy, 4. They got engaged in January of 2013 after meeting on the season finale of SNL in 2011.

Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith

In July, actress and chat show host Jada Pinkett Smith revealed she had a relationship with singer-songwriter August Alsina while she and husband, actor Will Smith, were temporarily separated in 2016. Pinkett Smith was being interviewed by Smith on her show Red Table Talk and admitted she “got into an entanglement” with Alsina. “We were over,” Pinkett Smith said, after agreeing that she and Smith decided to separate to find out what made each of them “happy”. Clearing up recent media reports of her husband giving his blessing to the affair, Pinkett Smith said Alsina would have “seen it as permission because we were separated amicably”.
