This year, MiNDFOOD launched our first photography competition, showcasing the talent of our local photographers.

Each month we ask a reader to share a photo to fit with a theme, with the winner published in the magazine and our best photographer of the year taking home a $1,000 prize.

Kicking off our inaugural photo competition, Nikita Burnett’s stunning shot of the Catlins in the early hours of New Year’s eve perfectly captures ‘The Essence of Summer’.

“We arrived as the colours of the day were beginning to brighten,” says Burnett. “The native red tussocks stretched out before us and it was like walking into an ocean.”

Aussie reader Christian Horgan perfectly illustrates an Australian summer with her shot of a vintage mini on the beach.

For our April theme of ‘Celebration’, Margie Sutherland made us smile with her photo of her grandson Braxton. “It was his first birthday and we started with a Cake Smash,” she says.

Auckland reader Cornelia Milroy was our favourite photographer for May with her ‘Motherly Love’ shot. “My husband took this with his phone without me even knowing, so it really was a special moment,” she says.

“As I wandered around the island, this mother and chick caught my eye because it was such a tender and sweet moment.”

Australian reader Emma Frater shared this ‘Sweet’ moment between two ponies in the Megalong Valley. “They were so peaceful and gentle and a few came up to the fence to greet us,” she says.

We loved Kiwi reader Nicola Edwards’ shot of a lion lazing around in Kenya.

“This lion made me realise that we share many emotions with the animals around us. Was he reflecting on a successful hunt, or the one that got away?”
