Egypt has enlisted a remote controlled submarine as it continues its search for flight recorders from the crashed EgyptAir flight MS804.

The EgyptAir flight, on route from Paris to Cairo, crashed killing all 66 people on board. Smoke was apparently detected minutes before the crash and investigators hope the black boxes will hold clues as to why.

Egyptian military and international sea-search teams also continue to scour an area north of Alexandria on the Egyptian coast for the black boxes.

It is thought the flight recorders may have sunk more than 2o00 metres but Egypt’s president, Abdel Fatah al-Sisi said the submarine could operate at depths at low as 3000 metres.

The recorders emit a constant signal pointing to their location, but this only continues for four to five weeks in the water before their power runs out.

Fatah al-Sisi said it would take time to determine the cause of the crash.

“All the theories are possible,” he said in a televised address. “There is no particular theory we can affirm right now.”
