Sparkle & Shine

When two young people with artistic flair and vast experience in the field of graphic design decided to share their lives and personal space, the end result could only be colourful and harmonious. Angie Georgopoulos and her husband Linos Ieridis have created a getaway in the southern suburbs of Athens, marrying vintage and modern elements.

The house’s unique architecture means very few spaces have
a conventional layout and 45-degree angles are common.

The couple’s love for travelling is evident through the wooden door and window casings from Britain, as well as through the plaster details on the ceiling, which are of French origin. Cassis is used as the predominant colour in the house because it is “both powerful and modern”, according to Angie. Indeed, the rich pink-purple shade creates a warm feeling in virtually every corner, as well as a sense of sophisticated romanticism throughout.

In the living room, the majestic fuchsia armchairs, which used to belong to Angie’s grandmother, steal the spotlight. Angie trusted them with furniture maker Sotiris Kordas, who gave them “the kiss of life” using fabrics by Designers Guild.

Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year, especially when you have kids in the house. Nikolas, their son, loves the gift boxes made of mirror that Angie has placed under the white Christmas tree. “Nickel is one of the trademark materials in the house,” Angie says. The ornaments follow that same, sparkly motif: white and fuchsia Christmas tree balls, and glittering disco balls hanging from the tree and placed in various other spots such as the dining room and even inside the fireplace, where the hostess has placed decorative, white-painted logs. An antique-style picture frame mirror that was purchased from Notting Hill’s Portobello Market in London is a focal point in the room.

Moving on to the dining room, the impressive dining table, designed by sculptor Nikolas Klouvatos is attention grabbing, along with the Philippe Starck Louis Ghost chairs that surround it. Diagonally opposite from the dining room, the “talking wall” states: “I love lots of colours. What I can’t stand is pastel hues – they’re so boring!”, and Angie couldn’t agree more. Despite that claim, however, the use of light pink at the staircase creates the illusion that there’s a carpet there, leading up to the next floor.

The fairytale-like cassis is the predominant colour in the bedroom, too. The wall behind the bed matches perfectly with the bedcovers and the cushions complement the flowered and striped motifs on the furnishings. The bedside table lamps were also discovered during one of their many visits to Portobello Market, London. The lampshades have been embellished with each of the owners’ initials, defining in an imaginative way Linos’s and Angie’s personal space. The stencil on the wall, the colourful “carpet” on the staircase and the gift boxes under the tree also bear the hostess’s signature to add that personal touch.

The scarf by Lanvin, which has been placed above the fireplace in the lounge room instead of a painting or a mirror, adds elegance, as does the plaster chandelier by Mathieu Challières, which further reinforces the sense of French finesse evident in this room and throughout the house.
