Scarlett Johansson could pick up two Screen Actors Guild Awards for her roles in Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit.

With the hotly anticipated action movie, ‘Avengers Endgame about to hit theatres’, Scarlett Johansson reprises her role as Black Widow – for the sixth time – and chats to MiNDFOOD about her career, stunts… and arts and crafts.

You’ve been in this franchise for years now. Do you have feel you’ve done everything?

I am cooked! Yeah, over the past ten years, I can only speak for my character’s arc, but my character started in Iron Man 2 as a sort of glorified secretary with this secret skill set but her true identity wasn’t revealed until the last part of the movie. And in Avengers I really got to be one of the boys, for better or worse, and I think that was fitting.

You’ve done a lot of indie films as well as blockbusters – do you have any particular career strategy?

Well, I am always looking for stuff that is challenging and something that I haven’t done before. I am an actor for hire. Big, small, I’m here. Submit something! Ask me! (laughs)

Having played Black Widow so many times, and often with the same actors, it must be a bit like going back to school. I’d like to take you back to those days. What kind of kid were you? Were you anxious about things like not wearing the right clothes?

I think even when I was younger that was more important than when I got older for some reason. But I had a lot of really close friends that are still my friends in middle school and also in high school, so I was always excited to see my friends, even though I was bumming about homework. I loved the social aspect of school and there were some teachers I was excited to start class with and then others I was bummed about. (laughs) But I really liked the routine of school because I was traveling a lot and I was working a lot as a kid and so just coming back to something routine was very grounding for me. So I looked forward to that.

With all the martial arts training and the stunts you’ve done – could you kick someone’s ass if you had to?

(laughs) Fortunately, I have never had to brandish a weapon in real life. Yeah, I have definitely had to handle a lot of actual weapons for my job, but never had to pull a knife on anybody, thank God. So I’m not sure about that.

Last time we spoke, you talked about your love for arts and crafts – now that you have a 4-year-old daughter you probably have an appreciative audience.

(laughs) Well, yes, I do arts and crafts with my daughter, but I have to say, anything that requires patience and small pieces, I’m not so great.

If you could meet Black Widow in real life….

I’d say, ‘Gosh. How do you sleep at night? You must be really haunted by your past. We should talk!’

Avengers Endgame is in cinemas in Australia and New Zealand on April 24.
