Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling are playing Barbie and Ken in upcoming ‘Barbie’ flick
The film has found its Barbie and Ken.

When news first broke that a live-action Barbie movie was in the works, many people were understandably questioning what the adaptation would look like.

But now with news of casting and a talented director behind it, we can’t wait to see it hit the big screen.

Margot Robbie has been cast as the iconic Mattel doll in the Barbie movie and in October 2022, it was revealed that Ryan Gosling will be playing her boyfriend, Ken.

Little Women‘s Greta Gerwig will be directing the film and given her stellar track record (her directorial debut Ladybird earned five Oscar nominations), the Barbie movie has plenty of talent to back it up.

Joining Gerwig is her long-time creative partner Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story, Frances Ha, The Meyerowitz Stories) who will be co-writing the script with her.

As to the plot, not much is known, though according to IMDB it follows “a doll living in ‘Barbieland’ expelled for not being perfect enough and sets off on an adventure in the real world.”

In an interview with Variety in July 2021, Robbie said playing the iconic doll “comes with a lot of baggage. And a lot of nostalgic connections. But with that comes a lot of exciting ways to attack it. People generally hear ‘Barbie’ and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be,’ and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, ‘Oh, well, maybe I don’t.’”

Production on the Barbie movie begins in 2022, with a release date expected in 2023.
