Revealed: Top baby names of 2018 in New Zealand

The list of 2018’s most popular baby names has been released, with Oliver taking it for boys’ – for the sixth year in a row – while Charlotte was most popular for girls.

New Zealand’s Department of Internal Affairs has released the 13,668 different first names that were given to 59,302 babies in 2018, with Oliver and Charlotte the post popular with Kiwi parents.

Charlotte and Oliver have been consistent in popularity for many years, while Nikau and Mia are the most loved Māori names for boys and girls respectively.

Isla was the second most popular girls’ name with 229 babies being graced with the name in 2018, only four less than Charlotte. Olivia came in third with 211.

When it came to choosing a name for their baby boy, parents chose Oliver 293 times followed by Jack with 273 and Noah with 243.

Meanwhile, over in Australia, Oliver also topped the baby name leaderboard in 2018 for the boys and Ava for the girls. According to news.com.au, Aussie favourites Lindsey and Kelsey are likely to be revived in 2019.

The Duchess of Cambridge’s choice of Charlotte for her daughter may have had something to do with the popularity of the name. In 2019, all eyes will be on Meghan Markle’s choice for her and Prince Harry’s first child.
