Cool in the cringe: Mums are naturally wired to embarrass their kids, but Reese Witherspoon has just shown you can still be cool in the process.

If you haven’t heard of TikTok, that doesn’t mean you’re not cool.

In fact, until recently, that meant you were just as cool as Reese Witherspoon – who didn’t have faintest idea what it was until her son unwittingly sent her first TikTok experience viral.

In a video posted to her Instagram account that’s been viewed almost three million times, the famed Hollywood actress relates to mums of teenagers everywhere when she was given a brief tutorial in the social music app by her 15-year-old son Deacon.

Never has cringe met cool with such adorable results.

In the short video, Deacon fields typically “mum” questions about what the app does and why it’s so popular.

“For all the moms out there, what is TikTok?” the 43-year-old asks her eldest son.

“It’s like a short form video platform for kids, social media,” he says

“Do people pick a song they like and they lip-sync the words,?” she asks, before throwing some dance moves unprompted – and no doubt unwelcome by her co-star.

Mums everywhere will relate to Witherspoon’s attempt at sharing in her kids’ fun – not to mention her son’s pained expressions.

The “Big Little Lies” star pondered what she would name her own TikTok channel.

“Reese Tik?” she asked. “Reese Tok?”

“No!” Deacon replies

“Reese to the Tik to the Tok?” she offered back.

Same response – another dismissive “no”.

Again, completely relatable.
