Real versus artificial – the Christmas tree debate

If you love the smell of a real Christmas tree, and spend time selecting the right one, adorning it with lights and babbles, you may want to stop reading here.

Researchers from the University of Bergen have found that up to an astounding 25,000 insects, mites and spiders may be sound asleep inside the tree too. The good news is most of them stay in the tree, and don’t pose any risk or danger to people or furniture.

As there’s nothing to feed off they quickly dry out and die. The amount of bugs found in a tree varies a lot, depending on the type of tree it is, and whether the tree has been farmed or not.

The researchers found that most of the bugs are invisible to the human eye. And while the news may cause your skin to crawl a little, it certainly shouldn’t be a reason to give up enjoying your real Christmas tree, particularly if you are trying to reduce your carbon footprint.

Research from Saint Joseph’s University have found that cutting real Christmas trees is less environmentally harmful than using an artificial one for six years.
