The Queen’s First London Fashion Week Visit

The Queen’s First London Fashion Week Visit
Queen Elizabeth II made a surprise visit to London Fashion Week, where she sat front row alongside Anna Wintour.

Queen Elizabeth made her first ever appearance at London Fashion Week to present the inaugural Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design. The award recognises the important role of the fashion industry in society, and is presented to an emerging British designer who shows originality, skill and value to the community each year.

The Queen, wearing an Angela Kelly tweed dress and jacket detailed with Swarovski crystals, sat front row at designer Richard Quinn’s show with US Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour. Richard is the first recipient of the Queen’s award, whose collection features remarkable prints.

Addressing the audience as she presented the award, the Queen said: “It is a great pleasure to be here at London Fashion Week today. From the tweed of the Hebrides to Nottingham lace, and of course Carnaby Street, our fashion industry has been renowned for outstanding craftsmanship for many years, and continues to produce world-class textiles and cutting edge, practical designs.” The 91-year-old finished by saying: “As a tribute to the industry, and as my legacy to all those who have contributed to British fashion, I would like to present this award for new, young talent.”

The Queen also toured the showrooms to view fashion displays and meet designers, before meeting with young people from a British Fashion Council initiative supporting new talent, called New Gen.
