The Minneapolis police officer was filmed as Floyd’s called out for help, begging for his life. It has been reported that Floyd and Chauvin worked together as bouncers at a nightclub in the area.
Four officers, including Chauvin, were fired.
The state’s bureau of criminal apprehension took Chauvin into custody, but did not specify where the 19-year veteran is being held.
“There may be subsequent charges later,” Mike Freeman, the lead prosecutor for Hennepin county, told reporters at a press conference. He said a detailed complaint would be made available on Friday afternoon.
The viral video and Floyd’s death has reignited the longstanding anger over systemic racism in America, especially in the criminal justice system.
Smoke hung over the Longfellow neighbourhood of Minneapolis on Friday after demonstrators stormed and burned down the city’s 3rd police precinct, the headquarters of the officers involved in Floyd’s death. Chants of Floyd’s name and “No justice, no peace” could be heard throughout the area.
While the majority of protesters were peaceful, some demonstrators looted businesses and set fires in Minneapolis, seven people were shot and injured in demonstrations in Louisville, more than 40 people were arrested in New York city, and shots were fired as protesters blocked traffic in downtown Denver.
“This shouldn’t be ‘normal’ in 2020 America,” Former President Obama said, referring to the discrimination many Americans experience in their day to day lives, and called on Americans to come together to create a “new normal” to root out institutional racism.
Minnesota’s governor, Tim Walz, a Democrat, had called in the national guard on Thursday evening as Minneapolis faced escalating unrest. More than 500 soldiers were reportedly deployed across the metro area, but with the principal task of protecting the city’s fire department.
