Peter Dinklage criticises Disney for ‘backwards’ story of dwarves in upcoming Snow White remake
The Game of Thrones actor has described the Brothers Grimm story as a "backwards tale".

Disney has come under fire from actor Peter Dinklage for its upcoming live-action adaptation of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

The 52-year-old actor, who has a form of dwarfism called achondroplasia, said in an interview with podcaster Marc Maron that he was taken aback by how the Disney retelling of the Brothers Grimm story was both progressive and backward. West Side Story‘s breakout star Rachel Zegler has been cast in the lead role.

“They were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White. But you’re still telling the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”.

“You’re progressive in one way but you’re still making that backward story of seven dwarves living in the cave,” he continued.

“They were so proud of that, and all love and respect to the actress and the people who thought they were doing the right thing but I’m just like, ‘What are you doing?'”

In response to the criticism, Disney issued a statement saying it would “avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film”.

“We are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community.”

“We look forward to sharing more as the film heads into production after a lengthy development period.”
