Our favourite fashion tributes over the years

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and when it comes to the fashion world, there’s no shortage of tributes, homages and show-stopping throwbacks to admire.

From Elizabeth Hurley’s infamous black Versace gown to the timeless fashion of Princess Diana, we relive our favourite fashion recreations and reimaginings.

Who better to pay tribute to themselves than Jennifer Lopez? The star cemented herself as a fashion icon when she wore an ultra-revealing green Versace gown at the Grammy Awards in 200. Two decades later, JLO stole the show at the Versace Spring/Summer 2020 Milan fashion week show, strutting down the runway in a reimagined version of the famous dress.

24-year-old Zendaya proved once again she is a style queen at the 2021 BET awards, where she wore the same purple Versace gown Beyonce wore at the 2003 BET awards, where she made performed her first solo hit ‘Crazy in Love’. For her BET appearance, Zendaya opted for a longer, flowy version of the ethereal dress.

Elizabeth Hurley’s figure-hugging black Versace ‘safety pin’ dress is so famous it has its own Wikipedia page. In 1994, a then-unknown Hurley stole the show when she wore the gown at the Four Weddings and a Funeral premiere with her boyfriend Hugh Grant, a moment that not only propelled Hurley into stardom, but made Versace a household name. 25 years later, Hurley donned the sexy dress once again for Harper’s Bazaar’s April 2019 issue, this time with a “more demure” version and a long sleeve on one side.

For her 2019 Met Gala appearance, Crazy, Rich, Asians actress Gemmy Chan paid homage to the iconic Elizabeth Taylor in her 1968 film Boom, with a breathtaking crystal headpiece.

Zendaya seems to have shown a love for fashion homages, this time with a tribute to the one and only, Cher. Her stunning yellow Valentino gown, which she wore to 2021 Oscars was a lovely nod to a yellow cut-out jumpsuit Cher wore on The Sonny and Cher Show in 1970. This time, Zendaya chose to accessorise her yellow look at $6 million of dazzling Bulgari jewels.

The Duchess of Cambridge has paid tribute to her late mother-in-law Princess Diana many times over the years. In one of her most recent appearances, Kate donned a bright blue Zara blazer and pleated skirt which looked strikingly similar to an outfit worn by Diana in 1992 during a visit to South Korea.
