Michele's fascination with rewriting gender norms continued with boxy suiting, bold colours and elaborate embellishment dominating both his menswear and womenswear looks.

After Gucci’s last autumn/winter runway show which involved models carrying snakes, dragons and replicas of their own heads, it was anyone’s guess what creative director Alessandro Michele might send down the catwalk in Milan.

This time it was a wild assortment of masks that turned heads at the autumn/winter 2019 show. “The mask, in fact, lets us show ourselves as we please and play our acting role as we think is best,” said the accompanying show notes. “It’s the possibility to choose how to exercise our freedom to show ourselves through a powerful filter that constantly selects what we want to share about us and what we want to conceal instead.”

Michele’s fascination with rewriting gender norms continued with boxy suiting, bold colours and elaborate embellishment dominating both his menswear and womenswear looks.

And then there was the star-studded front row – as if Michele’s creations alone weren’t enough to get our attention. Salma Hayek wore an eye-catching embellished purple number complete with red fur trim, while Saoirse Ronan opted for a menswear-inspired look with a navy blazer, red vest and showstopping orange pants.
