Great news for skiers and snowboarders in the Queenstown Lakes District - ski fields have opened!

Queenstown’s Coronet Peak and Cardrona Alpine Resort near Wanaka both opened today, and New Zealanders are urged to make their way to their favourite mountain to make the most of the snow.

Treble Cone will open on Saturday, while The Remarkables is set to open on 4 July in time for the school holidays.

Cardrona Alpine Resort and Treble Cone communications executive Jen Houltham told Star News bookings were “very positive” for both ski fields despite the borders being closed to international tourists.

The Remarkables’ new Sugar Bowl chairlift is on track to open early July, along with 2.5km of new intermediate trails.

Meanwhile, Canterbury ski field Mt Hutt has been open since 12 June.

North Island skiers will have to wait a few more days, with Whakapapa and Tūroa due to open 1 July.
