New Zealand’s best pie
A kiwi roast dinner in a pie has won over the taste buds of the judges of the 2014 Bakels New Zealand Supreme Pie Awards.

The Clareville Bakery in Carterton has taken the title of the ‘best pie’ makers in New Zealand after its lamb cutlet and kumara mash pie was judged Supreme Pie at the 2014 Bakels New Zealand Supreme Pie Awards.

The pie baked by Michael Kloeg impressed the judges with its succulent taste and balance of ingredients.

“The pastry, meat and gravy were in perfect ratios. The lamb was cooked to perfection and the kumara mash was a great flavour which worked well with the lamb. It reminded me of a kiwi roast dinner,” Brent Kersel, managing director of Bakels New Zealand and pie awards judge, said.

This year a record breaking 4832 pies were entered by 533 bakeries from across the country. A five per cent increase in entries on last year’s competition, now in its 18th year.
