New Zealand Wins First Two Medals at Winter Olympics
Two sixteen-year-old Kiwi athletes have won Bronze in PyeongChang.

Two New Zealand teenagers have won Bronze at the winter Olympics – the first medals for New Zealand in 26 years.

Zoi Sadowski-Synnott, a sixteen-year-old from Wanaka, was awarded New Zealand’s first medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics. The teenager won Bronze in the snowboard big air, scoring the best individual score of the day with a 92.00 in the second of her three runs.

The gold medal went to Austrian Anna Gasser, with American Jamie Anderson taking silver. When Sadowski-Synnott qualifed for the finals earlier this week she said she was “over the moon”, adding that she has “never landed that trick before in competition. I’m just so happy.”

Now, 16-year-old Nico Porteous (pictured below) has won bronze in the men’s halfpipe. Nico’s second run score of 94.80 was the third-highest score of the day and briefly landed him in first place. He was beaten by Americans David Wise’s and Alex Ferreira’s.

New Zealand has not won a medal at the Winter Olympics since 1992 when Annalise Coberger won silver in Albertville for slalom skiing.
