Another option is to try something different or new in your routine. What’s worth the time and money?

We look at some new arrivals and how they help achieve great skin.

Boost Lab Serums, $34.95 each

A new serum collection now available in Farmers stores, similar to Deciem’s wildly popular The Ordinary, Boost Lab was created to offer clinically proven results at an affordable price point. The seven serums are formulated and made in New Zealand and are intended to target the most common skin conditions and concerns. Easily added to your routine after cleansing and moisturising, they include Vitamin C Brightening Serum, Vitamin B3 Blemish Rescue Serum, Multi-Peptide Anti-Ageing Serum, 2-D Hyaluronic Hydro Boost Serum, Retinol Night Renewal Serum, AHA Resurfacing Serum and Bio-Active Eye Reset Serum.

Avène A-Oxitive Antioxidant  Defence Serum, $64.99

Avène’s new A-Oxitive Antioxidant Defence Serum is like your skin’s bodyguard, assisting it in warding off negative effects the environment – think pollution, UV and other stressors – can have on skin. Those challenges can impact the way skin looks, playing a part in uneven texture, fine lines and pigmentation. Vitamins C and E are some of the most effective antioxidants to help fend off these challenges as well as improve the current appearance of your complexion. They’re included here in a uniquely stablised, time-release form that’s better able to benefit skin, resulting in a brighter, refreshed and more radiant appearance over time.

L’Oreal Paris Revitalift Laser Pure Retinol Night Serum, $49.99

Making retinol easy and accessible is L’Oreal’s new Paris Revitalift Laser Pure Retinol Night Serum. Retinol is widely researched and respected as the most useful and effective of anti-aging skincare ingredients, but it can sometimes leave skin sensitive and dry in prescription-only forms, and department-store versions commonly only hold very low concentrations of the wonder ingredient. This before-bed serum is L’Oreal’s highest concentration of pure retinol ever,  at 0.2%, and carefully formulated with other beneficial hydrating ingredients to ensure skin tolerates it well. Because Retinol can quickly degrade, L’Oreal has spent much time and effort also developing a formula that maintains its stability and potency, down to the last drop.

Coola skincare, from $65

Long beloved for its organic sunscreen and tanning formulas, Californian-cool company Coola has jumped into skincare with a six-product collection. The line follows it’s now well-established approach, that prioritises natural, sustainably-sourced organic ingredients with formulas that aim to minimise the damage of common skin aggressors including blue light, pollution and UV rays.

The new line offers a full skin regimen with a cleansing gel, daily moisturiser, sea salt exfoliator, antioxidant serum, hydrating mask and face mist. Our picks of the bunch so far are the refreshing Glowing Greens Detoxifying Facial Cleansing Gel and the fine Reawakening Rosewater Mist.

Ole Henriksen Dewtopia 20% Acid Night Treatment, $97

Much beloved for its resurfacing treatment products, this new arrival is a potent 20% acid night serum that smoothes skin texture, firms, improves elasticity and targets the look of dark spots, pores, fine lines and wrinkles. An all rounder that offers a balance of exfoliating and replenishing ingredients, it’s great for those who already use a resurfacing product, but if not, start out slowly, using a couple of times a week to gauge how skin adapts. Be sure to follow up with an SPF the morning after to protect your renewed skin!

Lancôme Advanced Génifique Yeux, $126

A spin off from its top-selling serum, Lancôme’s new Advanced Génifique Yeux eye cream calls on the same microbiome science that strengthens skin and delivers a healthy hydrated glow. Lancôme’s scientists subsequently learned that the skin of the eye contour has a specific microbiome, or healthy bacteria key to keeping skin in great shape, so they developed this new eye product.

A lightweight cream that sinks in quickly, it holds a complex of  seven pre- & probiotic fractions as well as hyaluronic acid, a vitamin C derivative (vitamin CG) and a blend of active ingredients to strengthen the fragile area, safeguard skin against pollution and tackle dark circles. So hydrating, the area looks fresh and youthful immediately after use.

Shiseido Ultimune Power Infusing Concentrate, $195

Shiseido’s incredibly popular hero serum Ultimune, known for its ability to strengthen skin’s defences against stressors that diminish the appearance of skin, has just had an update. The Ultimune reformulation promotes skin’s circulation to enhance the flow of essential ingredients. It also has botanical extracts of Heart Leaf Plant for resilience and and fermented Roselle flowers to provide probiotic activity. The brand says it has the ability to “recharge radiance in just 3 days” and given its lush, dewy yet rich texture, we wont be surprised! Over time it is designed to improve radiance, smoothness and resilience.

Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask in Gummy Bear, $32

And finally, one that’s a bit of fun! Laneige’s Lip Sleeping Mask’s (a luxe lip balm to you and I, but in a slightly thicker protective texture) are beloved for their nourishing texture that’s a delight to apply before bed. Now there’s a ‘gummy bear’ version that has a sweet, grape scent.

Where to get the pigmentation treatment that’s gaining worldwide buzz

The world’s best-selling depigmentation peel offers remarkable results and it currently comes with an added extra*.

Patchy, uneven pigmentation is high on our list of skin bugbears.

Our desire to minimise the brown uneven patches and spots and achieve a more even, fresh and glowing skin has fueled huge growth in the number of skincare products landing on shelves, seeking to address the issue.

Plenty of it helps, but much of it lacks the formulation intensity to effectively shift the pigmentation.

So what to try when you’re not getting the results you’re looking for, or you have widespread or stubborn melasma, hyperpigmentation or skin discolouration?

Seek the help of an expert! The Advanced Beauty Therapists at Skin Institute confirm these concerns are commonly among queries for customers seeking to achieve their best skin. High on the list of solutions is the Cosmelan Depigmentation Peel treatment, that’s gaining plenty of attention for its remarkable results on all ethnicities and skin tones.

In-clinic skincare treatment

‘Peel’ is a word that has the potential to cause the nervous to reconsider their options, but there’s no cause for apprehension. The term really refers to a professional strength skincare application that is carried out in clinic. It’s non-invasive and doesn’t hurt at all.

Developed in Spain and buzzed about worldwide, the Cosmelan Peel tackles all types of pigmentation with up to 95% reduction of melasma, post-inflammatory pigmentation and age spots. The in-clinic peel procedure is designed to reduce surface pigment and is followed by a special at home skincare regime to reduce pigment over three months.

This treats the source of pigment by reducing melanin overproduction at the source.

It can also improve dull skin, dark spots, dry areas, blemishes, and even acne scars.

The procedure involves a multi-ingredient, melanin-inhibiting mask being applied in a Skin Institute clinic which you leave on, and wash off later at home, after approximately 8 hours.

Once your skin has settled you continue using the pH-balanced skin care products provided instead of your usual skincare regime. Using this home skincare daily is essential to long term pigment reduction. After 3 months, it’s advised to switch to a skincare regime with Vitamin A, C and pigment inhibitor for the next 4 months.

According to Skin Institute’s experts, the initial reaction can involve a bit of itching (managed with an antihistamine) or some swelling and redness of the treated area but it rarely lasts longer than 48 hours.

The good news is results are expected within a week, where you can expect to see skin blemishes begin to fade significantly, and a brighter complexion revealed. After a couple of weeks, your skin will take on a dramatically shinier, healthier glow and the results will continue to improve even further over the following weeks. To ensure the results last, you must make sure you use effective high SPF and avoid the sun.

The treatment is not suitable if you’re pregnant or planning on getting pregnant; breastfeeding; allergic to any component of Cosmelan; on antibiotics, isotretinoin or hydroquinone; have a skin infection; or have recently had a peel or IPL or a laser treatment in the area.
