Nature’s best light show goes virtual: Watch the dazzling firefly event

At this time of year, synchronous fireflies light up the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee.

The male fireflies of the Photinus carolinus species all flash together following the same pattern.

They will flash about six times, followed by a break, followed by more sychronised flashing.

The annual public viewing of the fireflies has been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, so the light show has moved online.

Nonprofit Discover Life in America is offering a virtual viewing of the phenomenon on its YouTube channel.

The experience at Great Smoky Mountains National Park has become a major tourist attraction in recent years.

The National Park Service had to establish a lottery system. Last year only 1,800 tickets were granted to around 29,000 applicants.
