Mumm’s the word

By Joelle Thomson

The crème de la crème of Mumm Champagne has finally winged its way to New Zealand drinkers’ wine glasses, MiNDFOOD reports.

It was first made 127 years ago but only became commercially available in 1960 and New Zealand champagne lovers have had to wait till 2009 to get their lips around a glass of Champagne Mumm’s top bubbly.

The outstanding quality, Mumm De Cramant, was launched in late March 2009 in New Zealand.

This top tier sparkling wine from one of the larger champagne houses in France redefines Champagne Mumm for those who are used to the everyday champage from this producer.

In contrast to Mumm’s other bubblies, this wine is made with relatively low pressure, entirely from chardonnay grapes, resuling in a wine that’s not technically as fizzy as most champagnes on the market.

It was launched in tandem with two other not-seen-before-in-New Zealand bubbles from Mumm: the 1999 Mumm Vintage and the Mumm Rose (a non vintage; NV) bubbly. Like many top shelf champagnes, these wines are relatively rare and costly. Specialist wine stores in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown will stock them.

Expect to pay about NZ$180 for Mumm de Cramant; NZ$120 for 1999 Mumm Vintage; NZ$80 for Mumm Cordon Rouge and NZ$90 for Mumm Rosé.
