Emergency services have been called to the Cumberland Street Countdown in Dunedin after reports of a stabbing incident.

Four people have been injured, with three in critical conditions. The other person is moderately injured.

Reports from the Otago Daily Times say that police apprehended a man outside the supermarket at 2:35 pm today, Monday 10th May. The man was seen covered in blood and a witness says she heard screams from people and that someone “had a knife.”

Two ambulances have been called to the scene, along with police vehicles and armed police officers.

Witnesses say stretchers have been brought inside and once victim was seen with “an apparent neck wound” the ODT reports.

Another two witnesses who were shopping in the supermarket say they heard screams that got louder and louder.

“I saw one red hand among the people; a bloody hand, and everybody started running towards the exits.”

The witnesses say members of the public pinned down the man, but believe he broke free before police arrived on the scene.
