Morrison: Social restrictions ending ‘no time soon’
Australian prime minister Scott Morrison has said social distancing measures in place to slow the spread of coronavirus will not be lifted anytime soon.

Speaking to media on Tuesday, the prime minister said modelling based on Australian case data will determine when lockdowns are lifted.

“That’s no time soon,” he said.

“If we’re in a position to make changes in the future then of course we will, so long as we don’t compromise the other battle on the health front.”

Morrison said the data available to the Federal Government currently is “not based on Australian case data and does not model Australian responses”.

The current modelling is based on international data as Australian cases remain relatively low.

Australia’s chief medical officer Brendan Murphy said there are indications the curve is flattening in Australia.

“We’re now starting to see the wonderful up-take of social distancing by Australians really impact our future potential scenarios,” said Murphy.

“We’re not out of trouble at the moment but we are in a relatively strong position to keep the pressure on.

“We know the tools we are using do work, and we can scale them up or down as necessary.”

However, Murphy stressed it will be “weeks” before there is enough “meaningful data”, and Morrison said the government didn’t want to “make decisions based on poor process and poor data”.

“When we say we’re trusting the science here and the research, we’ve got to allow them to do that work properly and not meet arbitrary time frames.”
