Meghan Markle takes on slavery and human trafficking

Since she was bestowed with her HRH title, the Duchess of Sussex – formally Meghan Markle – has used her platform to focus on education and female empowerment. Now she has turned her attention to combating slavery and human trafficking.

Continuing her inspiring work to highlight the importance of education, the Duchess of Sussex met university leaders to discuss how to build a better world through higher education.

Duchess Meghan visited King’s College London on Wednesday to address important issues including human trafficking and modern slavery, gender equality and inclusion, peace and reconciliation, and climate change and resilience.

“Today we brought together university leaders, academics & #students to discuss how we can build a better world through #highered. We were honoured to be joined by HRH The Duchess of Sussex,” the ACU tweeted.

“Thanks @The_ACU for bringing us together! We had an excellent discussion about how research can tackle the problems of slavery and human trafficking. Thanks to HRH Duchess of Sussex for joining us!” Tweeted Laura Hammond, a professor of development studies at SOAS University London.

The Duchess had previously made a powerful speech about education during her first royal tour to students at the University of the South Pacific in Fiji in October.

Meghan’s visit to King’s College London comes after she met with Michelle Obama for the first time privately on Monday evening at the London stop of the former First Lady’s book tour – in support of her new memoir, Becoming– at the Southbank Centre.

“They spoke at length about the importance of supporting and empowering women across all cultures and communities,” a source told the Evening Standard. “They also talked about shared experiences of pregnancy and raising children, plus shared causes including girls’ education.”
