Meet our new Beauty Editor, Megan Bedford

Megan has worked in media for twenty years, starting out covering general news and entertainment before a stint in fashion writing while concurrently rummaging through, and offering her face up to try the latest products of the beauty editor that sat near her. For the past six years she’s covered beauty exclusively, committed not only to sharing the visual and sensorial delights new makeup and skincare offer, but also what really works, and the science and formulation that goes into each product behind the scenes.

What’s the best book you’ve read?

I’m not sure about the best books – it changes all the time for me. Like most people I loved Sally Rooney’s Normal People and Conversations with Friends, and I’ve just started Dolly Alderton’s Ghosts, so it’s fair to say I like books about relationships with all their exhilarating ups and wrenching downs. I did also enjoy The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid, about a fictional old Hollywood star reflecting on the twists and turns of her rise to the top and romantic entanglements along the way!

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt recently?

I think this year has only cemented an approach I’ve followed for a number of years after being dealt some challenging hands: you never know what life has in store, so magnify the good in each day, stay humble, be grateful, hold your loved ones close and know that health is true wealth.

Where will we find you this summer?

I’ll be that person at the beach under the biggest sun umbrella, wearing an obnoxiously large hat. As a beauty editor I’ve spent my fair share of time talking to skin experts and dermatologists and as such I’m a stickler for protection, but I absolutely love getting out and about! This season I’m hoping to visit Abel Tasman National Park with my partner and son.

When it comes to your beauty routine are you a minimalist or a maximalist? Describe your routine.

I’m somewhere in the middle. I’m not a fan of too many steps, but to somewhat I do use would be considered a lot.  I love makeup and enjoy the process of applying as well as wearing it, but I don’t feel like it’s essential either. I’m just as happy to go barefaced as wear a full face.

I do prioritise great active skincare that makes a difference to the appearance of skin. Being that I try many different brands regularly, my skin routine in terms of types of products remains the same but the brands change all the time.

It always involves a gentle gel cleanser, moisturiser and SPF in the morning, often a Vitamin C serum too.

In the evening I double cleanse with an oil cleanser then a cream or gel one, before applying a hydrating serum,  and sealing that moisture in with a good night cream.

Some nights I’ll rotate in a Vitamin A, an AHA exfoliant, a mist and an eye cream, but I don’t use everything every night.

What’s a beauty product that you can’t leave home without?

A good tinted lip balm with enough colour to double as a gloss. My favourite is Lanolips Tinted Balm SPF30.

What did you want to be when you were a kid?

A veterinarian. I LOVE animals.

If you weren’t a Beauty Editor, what would you be?

A florist. It’s something I’ve entertained several times, but not made the leap yet! My parents are avid gardeners and I grew up in a home often filled with cut flowers so I suspect that’s where the inclination comes from.

What have the last six months taught you about yourself?

That I shouldn’t be a florist! That I love to share my love of beauty and the talented people that inform the industry here. It’s by no means saving the world but the process of applying lipstick or a skincare routine can also be an important pick-me-up for many people – a little bit of control in an unpredictable day, week, month or year.

What is your most cherished possession?

My engagement ring. It was custom designed by good friends from Meadowlark jewellery with vintage elements but most importantly it’s imbued with the love it was given with. Beyond my partner and son it’s the one thing I’d save if my house was at risk.
