Luke Perry, aged 52 has died in a California hospital, surrounded by family.

Actor Luke Perry, best known for his roles on TV shows Beverly Hills 90210 and Riverdale, died on Monday at the age of 52 after suffering a massive stroke last week.

A representative for the actor confirmed his death on Tuesday morning (NZST).

“Actor Luke Perry, 52, passed away today after suffering a massive stroke,” the statement read. “He was surrounded by his children Jack and Sophie, fiancé Wendy Madison Bauer, ex-wife Minnie Sharp, mother Ann Bennett, step-father Steve Bennett, brother Tom Perry, sister Amy Coder, and other close family and friends. The family appreciates the outpouring of support and prayers that have been extended to Luke from around the world, and respectfully request privacy in this time of great mourning.  No further details will be released at this time.”

The star was taken to hospital in Burbank, California, on Thursday (NZST) last week after suffering a stroke at home in Sherman Oaks, on the outskirts of Los Angeles.

Perry stared in the current TV series Riverdale, and was also set to make a return to the big screen in 2019. He will now appear posthumously as real-life Canadian-American actor Wayne Maunder in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time In Hollywood, which is scheduled for release later this year.
