The Latest in Gut Health
Are all probiotics created equal? And what's the difference between 'good' and 'bad' bacteria?

We caught up with Lifestream Health medical ambassador Dr Emma Parry to discuss the latest research on gut health.

What is the latest research regarding bacteria and our health?

In recent years there has been more and more research showing how important the gut bacteria is. Areas of research have shown gut health has a role in diabetes, hypertension, immunity and brain function. Also, mood disorders and degenerative brain disorders have been associated with some harmful bacteria.

What’s the difference between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ bacteria?

Good bacteria live alongside us providing a protective layer on the surface of the gut lining. They assist in many ways, including food absorption and healthy immunity. Bad bacteria attack the cells of the gut and lead to natural responses and inflammation.

Are all probiotics created equal?

A probiotic contains some of the good bacteria, which can be taken as a pill, but it depends what particular strains of bacteria are used. For example, some strains have been studied in research for a particular benefit, such as their effect on mood or cholesterol level and fat handling by the body.
