Jane Fonda accepts BAFTA while being arrested
The Grace and Frankie star couldn't accept her award in person as she had been arrested.

However, that didn’t stop her from having the last word.

Fonda received the Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award for Excellence in Film from Bafta. As she was unable to attend the awards, Fonda delivered her acceptance speech via video.

She was filmed being arrested at a climate protest in Washington DC as she shouted: ‘Bafta, thank you!’ The 82-year-old added: ‘Thank you! I’m sorry I’m not there!’ before being escorted away by police. ‘I’m very honoured!’ she shouted, before being cheered by the crowds at the protest.

The Bafta Los Angeles Twitter account brought the incredible moment to everyone’s attention by writing: ‘Folks, @Janefonda accepted the Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award WHILE BEING ARRESTED. #Britannias.’

Fire Drill Friday

Grace and Frankie star Sam Waterston is arrested in Washington DC

Fonda made a pledge to get arrested ‘every Friday’ in order to draw attention to the climate crisis – and she appears to be sticking to her word.

Speaking to The Washington Post, she said: ‘I’m going to take my body, which is kind of famous and popular right now because of the [Grace and Frankie] and I’m going to go to DC and I’m going to have a rally every Friday.

‘It’ll be called Fire Drill Friday and we’re going to engage in civil disobedience and we’re going to get arrested every Friday,’ Fonda said. During her first arrest, Jane and her fellow activists were held for a few hours in a police cell, before each paying $50 to be released. She admitted that the plastic handcuffs hurt her wrists and that it was difficult for her to get in and out of the police van without her hands.

She wrote: ‘White plastic ‘handcuffs’ were put on each of us, we were taken to the nearby police station for a few hours. ‘The plastic handcuffs hurt more than the metal ones and I discovered that it’s not easy for an 82-year-old to get in and out of a police [van] without the use of her hands. All the policewomen and men were super polite and nice.’

This week, her Grace and Frankie co-star Sam Waterston joined Fonda and was also arrested. At the protest, the actor said this was his first time being arrested.
