Vibrant markets, diverse cuisine, rich culture and stunning natural beauty make up this area within New Zealand’s largest city.

FAVOURITE COFFEE

Coffee lovers are spoilt for choice in South Auckland. Local Andrew Craw says the best coffee in South Auckland is at Urban Soul in Manukau. Red Shed Palazzo is also a popular spot with locals, in its gorgeous garden setting.

WHERE TO EAT

Locals have been flocking to Volare for years. The family-owned Italian restaurant serves hearty, authentic fare. The Post Office Public House is also great for relaxed pub fare and a range of New Zealand beers. For an authentic Thai experience, the Secret Thai Garden is essential dining.

WHERE TO STAY

Many of South Auckland’s hotels are conveniently located close to the international airport. If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, Castaways Resort is located on the cli tops of Kariotahi Beach or you can opt for a boutique farmstay in Bombay Hills.

WHAT TO DO

South Auckland is home to a number of lively markets including New Zealand’s largest Polynesian-style market, the Otara Flea Market, which sells everything from produce to owers. There’s also the Takanini Farmers’ Market, which o ers a range of homemade delicacies, Awhitu Country Markets with great arts and crafts, Clevedon Farmers and Village Market, and Pakuranga Night Market, among others. For an adrenaline hit, head to Rainbow’s End for some thrill-seeking rides or take a spin at Formula E Indoor Raceway. The world-class tourist destination Vector Wero Whitewater Park offers the chance to try kayaking, rafting or stand-up paddle boarding. Family-friendly activities on o er range from feeding the animals at Ambury Farm Park to enjoying a picnic in the 64-hectare Auckland Botanic Gardens.

WHERE TO DRINK

The contemporary feel of Republic Bar and Kitchen is ideal for a quiet drink or dinner with friends. If you feel like some real local avour, head to New Zealand’s most awarded winery, Villa Maria Estate, to sample some of their wares or stay and enjoy a glass of wine and some lunch on the terrace at the Vineyard Café.
