Make your sugar cravings disappear

Healthy food swaps to avoid that mid-afternoon energy slump, and kick those sugar cravings to the curb.

Your brain likes glucose to function, and the body makes this glucose from the carbohydrates you eat. When your brain doesn’t get glucose you can feel what’s commonly known as hangry (hungry / angry). But, before you reach for that chocolate bar for your afternoon sugar fix – think twice – for it’s carbohydrates from whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains your brain needs to function optimally. These foods also come with a range of nutrients that provide a further boost to the brain, not just a straight sugar fix.

When it comes to whole grains, scientists have discovered new compounds that may explain their health benefits, reports a new study led by the University of Eastern Finland. A high intake of whole grains increased the levels of betaine compounds in the body which, in turn, was associated with improved glucose metabolism, among other things.

“Whole grains are one of the healthiest foods there is. For instance, we know that a high intake of whole grains protects against type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Up until now, however, we haven’t understood the cellular mechanisms through which a whole grain-rich diet impacts our body,” says Dr Kati Hanhineva, Principal Investigator of the study at the University of Eastern Finland.

Whole grains have also been found to protect your heart, reduce your cancer risk and keep you feeling fuller for longer. Whole grain is basically any grain that contains all the parts of the grain including the germ, endosperm and bran. Gluten-free whole grains include brown rice (white rice has had all the good stuff removed), buckwheat and quinoa. Whole grains with gluten include whole grain pasta, whole grain breads, rye, barley, oats and spelt.

Good foods to eat when sugar cravings kicks in

  • Wholegrain toast with mashed avocado: The toast is a good source of betaine and fibre, and the avocado is packed with good fats that keep you feeling full for longer.
  • A bowl of rolled oats with berries and plain yoghurt: The oats and yoghurt will keep your blood sugar stable, and the berries will give you a nutrient boost.
  • Vegetable soup with barley and legumes: This is quick to make and full of all the energy boosting goodness.
