How to Find the Perfect Foundation for Your Skin
Here’s what you need to know when you’re shopping for a new foundation.

Long gone are the days of heavy foundation formulas that cover up every inch of a natural complexion. Next-generation foundations that act as second skin while lasting the distance are here to stay. While foundation formulas of today are an impressive lot that can do anything from giving skin a healthy glow to fending off the signs of ageing, now that we’re somewhat spoilt for choice, finding the foundation of your dreams can involve a bit of homework. Here’s how to find the perfect foundation for your skin.

Prep and Prime

A thick layer of heavy-duty foundation won’t solve your complexion dilemmas. Although an impressive number of foundations come packed with skincare benefits, healthy, well-hydrated skin that’s been prepped with the right skincare will help create the ideal canvas. Before you reach for your foundation of choice or begin the quest to find a new one, it pays to refine and rethink your entire beauty routine. Discover some of our skincare must-haves for all ages and skin types here

Know Your Type

Certain foundation formulations work better for certain skin types, so it pays to get to know your skin a little better before you make your decision. The first step to finding the perfect foundation is understanding your skin type as this will determine which formulation is best suited to your skin. It’s a myth that make-up causes breakouts but if you have blemish-prone skin, opting for a heavy, oily formulation that’s bound to clog up pores won’t be doing your complexion any favours. Look for something lightweight and oil-free, and don’t rely on your foundation to cover up imperfections.

Pick Your Coverage

Once you’ve figured out your skin type, it’s time to think about what kind of coverage you’re after, the finish you want and when you’re going to wear your new foundation. Do you want a foundation that provides maximum coverage? Are you looking for something lightweight which will give your skin a glow? Beauty trends have evolved considerably and today’s look is less about reaching for a foundation that will simply cover-up and is more about finding a formulation that will enhance and work with your skin’s assets.

Try Before You Buy

Swatching foundation on your hand can help you get a feel for the texture of the formulation, but you need to try it on your face to really know. Asking in-store for a sample of a new foundation and then trying it for a day or two is a great idea.  Pick the right shade by swiping foundation along your jawline. Pick the shade that seems to disappear into your skin.
