Top tips on how to clean a water bottle
Has your beloved reusable water bottle gotten a little funky? Here's how to clean a water bottle and get rid of the gunk and nasty bacteria.

Ever wondered how to clean a water bottle the right way?

As we’re all trying to do our bit to cut down on single-use plastics, more and more of us are turning to re-useable plastic or metal water bottles.

Unfortunately, however, if left for long (or even short) periods of time, these eco-friendly alternatives can become a top breeding ground for bacteria and mould – which thrive in dark, damp spaces.

It’s therefore important to keep your bottle hygienic by cleaning it at the end of each day. Here are our top tips on how to clean a water bottle.

How to clean a water bottle:

1. Use the dishwasher

Provided your water bottle is dishwasher-friendly, this is probably the simplest way to get it sparkling clean.

Simply pop it in the dishwasher upside-down (and place the lid on the top rack) and run it through a hot cycle. Germs will be gone in no time.

2. The vinegar solution

Vinegar is a natural disinfectant, and a very effective option for cleaning your drink bottles.

Give the bottle a quick wash with soap and water first, then refill with hot water and a couple of tablespoons of vinegar.

Leave to soak overnight to kill most bacteria, then just rinse well (until the aroma of vinegar is gone) and allow to dry.

3. Try baking soda

Much like vinegar, bicarb soda is a perennial favourite for home cleaning tasks – so why not put it to use with your water bottle?

Simply place two or three tablespoons of baking soda into your bottle, and top it up with warm water.

Replace the lid and shake well to mix, then leave the bottle to sit for a few hours. Then rinse out with hot water, and the job will be done.

Storage tips

Once you’ve cleaned your water bottle, you must make sure it’s completely dry before putting it away. If it’s still damp when stored bacteria can grow, and all your hard work will be for nothing.
