In our fast-paced, often cutthroat world, where those who speak up loudest are often those who succeed, quieter individuals may find it difficult to thrive and feel happy. So how do those whose personality is quieter and more withdrawn learn to love living among all the noise? The experts may have an answer.

Becoming an extrovert: Say ‘bye’ to shy

Psychologist Tim Higgs recommends trying these tricks to thrive in an extroverted world.

  • Be aware of what drains your energy.

If you find meetings or other types of interaction leave you exhausted, schedule your calendar so you have some breathing space in between.

  • When in a meeting or large group of people, jump into the conversation by using the ‘breach’ technique: buy yourself some time to think of what you’re going to say by quickly paraphrasing what’s already been discussed.

Practice the ‘EASE’ process to de-escalate difficult conversations:

  • EMPATHISE with the other person;
  • ASSERTyour opinion;
  • SUGGEST a way to resolve the conflict; and
  • EXPECT the other person might present further objections.

Repeat as necessary, but be careful how you label yourself.

Instead of telling yourself you’re always shy or terrible at making conversation, look for exceptions where you’ve done well in social situations.
