Hand in Hand: A Benefit for Hurricane Harvey Relief

American entertainers have come together to raise more than $14 million for the Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma relief appeal. 

Hollywood heavyweights Leonardo DiCaprio and George Clooney led the Hand In Hand: A Benefit for Hurricane Harvey telethon, along with many other stars including Oprah, Cher and Nicole Kidman.

The telethon included a range of performances from American music stars including Stevie Wonder, who opened up the one-hour special with a performance of Lean On Me. Other musicians who performed included Usher, Demi Lovato and Miranda Lambert.

Beyonce appeared via a recorded message offering messages of hope, encouraging people of all races to come together and support one another. ‘Natural disasters don’t discriminate. They don’t see if you’re an immigrant, black or white, Jewish or Muslim, rich or poor…We’re all in this together,’ Beyonce said.

Volunteers like Julia Roberts,  Tom Hanks and Justin Bieber were on hand to answer phone calls and take donations. Apple donated $5 million to the appeal.

‘Tonight we want to help,’ said Leonardo DiCaprio.

‘We’re here to raise money and lift some spirits,’ said Jamie Foxx. ‘When tough times hit this is who we are …. when we join together hand in hand.’

‘Let’s help lift victims out of the darkness,’ DiCaprio urged.

It has been estimated that the storms caused between $150 billion and $290 billion in damage to Texas and Florida.

At least 70 people died during Hurricane Harvey, and 12 deaths have been reported in America. from Hurricane Irma.
