Get the look: Nicole Kidman’s fresh, modern cover beauty look

With her enviable complexion it’s no surprise Nicole Kidman follows a fastidious beauty routine. The Undoing and Big Little Lies star undoubtedly picked up many makeup tips during her time in the chairs of Hollywood’s top makeup artists, but it’s been her commitment to skincare that she’s been equally as vocal about when it comes to her beauty approach.

In December her partnership with SeraLabs Seratopical CBD skin care line was announced, apparently having become a fan of the benefits of topical CBD following an ankle injury earlier in 2020. CBD is a naturally-occurring, non-psychoactive chemical compound found in cannabis plants. In skincare it’s said to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits which can be beneficial in treating skin concerns like inflammation, dryness and free radical damage that can speed the signs of aging.

Growing up a fair-skinned child of the 80s in Australia, the actress says she grew up with an awareness of the damage the sun can have and spent much of her time covered in pink and white zinc. “It was just humiliating on the beach!” she told W! Magazine, but admits the commitment has paid off in the long run.

As a result, and as an ambassador for Neutrogena since 2017,  she regularly extols the benefits of its Ultra-Sheer line of SPF.

“To now have sunscreen you don’t see, yet you still get the protection, because it was actually the only thing that really protected me, particularly my nose. I just totally believe in it and I would have the worst skin now if I hadn’t have protected it.”

When it comes to wearing makeup, Kidman is fairly consistent, sticking to what works for her features. That involves perfecting her peaches and cream complexion, adding a flush of blush, defining her eyes with a deep hue of shadow and filling in lips with a rosebud-hue lipstick.

It’s exactly the approach seen on our stunning March cover. To recreate Kidman’s modern makeup look try these steps:

  1. Start with well moisturised skin and apply Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation, $109, blending well with a dense bristle foundation brush. Finish skin with a sweep of translucent powder.
  2. Brush brows up and into place and set with a clear brow gel.
  3. Use a soft pearl eyeshadow all over eyelids before defining the upper lashline and outer crease with a deep blue shadow like Dior 5 Couleurs Couture Eyeshadow palette in Denim, $127.  Finish eyes by curling lashes with an eyelash curler and then applying two coats of Hourglass Unlocked Instant Extensions Mascara, $51
  4. Tap a touch of cream to powder blush like MAC’s Glow Play Blush in Grand, $49 onto the apples of cheeks and slightly up toward the ears.
  5. Fill lips with a cream lipstick like YSL Rouge Pur Couture in Rosewood Supreme, $66

Though she’s equally happy to wear her hair in naturally-formed ringlet curls, or softer waves as seen in her beautiful scene-stealing bohemian styles in The Undoing, the relaxed blow-dry as seen on our cover is ideal way to showcase textured layers – a returning trend our experts spoken to in the Future Beauty special pinpointed would be major this year.

To recreate Nicole’s tousled style try the following steps:

1. Start by blow drying hair to get the smoothest results. If you’d prefer to enhance the waves you already have, just skip this step. Prep wet hair with an anti-frizz cream like Pureology Smooth Perfection Intense Smoothing Cream, $31. Apply to your hands, then run your palms over hair. Use a large round brush to blow-dry smoothing hair up and away from the roots to encourage volume.

2. Once hair is dry, divide it into medium sized sections. Spritz a section with heat-protecting spray like Redken Iron Shape 11 Thermal Holding Spray, $38, then wrap it around a closed curling iron with a large barrel. Ensure each section is wrapped around the barrel going away from your face to create the slight flicked-out effect. Wait a few seconds and then release and repeat with each section, letting each fall without disturbing while they cool.

3. Run your fingers gently through hair to break up the waves and encourage movement. Add a spritz of lightweight, flexible hairspray like Kevin Murphy Bedroom Hair Texturising Hairspray, $53.
