Game of Thrones will get a prequel – but it's not going to be the series we were all expecting.

Acclaimed HBO series Game of Thrones has had no shortage of news headlines over the past few weeks. Earlier in the week the show’s award-winning showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss were lambasted by fans and press for a recent Q&A.

During the Q&A the pair described the production of Game of Thrones as a “10-year drunk park”, complained about “giving up” 10 years of their life while admitting surprise that they were entrusted with the show given how little experience they had.

While the recent revelations have left many reeling, fans will be delighted to hear that HBO is green-lighting a new Game of Thrones prequel.

Here’s what we know so far:

The Game of Thrones Prequel will tell the story of House Targaryen

President of HBO Programming, Casey Bloys, revealed at WarnerMedia Day that the prequel, House of Dragons, will tell the story of House Targaryen and will be set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones.

Casting and air date has not been revealed. The announcement was made during Bloys’ presentation for HBO Max – a new streaming service launching in May 2020. The prequel could be a big drawcard for the new service in an increasingly crowded on-demand marketplace.

Another Game of Thrones prequel has been canned in the process

HBO has cancelled another prequel that starred Australia actress Naomi Watts. According to an HBO press release from June 2018, the series – with the production title Bloodmoon – would take place “thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones” and would chronicle “the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into it’s darkest hours.” The show was set to reveal the secrets of Westeros’s history including the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East and the Stark family.

Miguel Sapochnik and Ryan Condal are the show’s co-creators

HBO has revealed that Miguel Sapochnik and Ryan Condal will serve as co-creators for House of Dragons. Sapochnik’s resume includes directing six Game of Thrones episodes. Sapochnik scooped up Emmy and DGA awards for the episode “Battle of the Bastards”, was nominated for an Emmy for his direction of “The Long Night” and won the Emmy for Best Drama Series as an executive producer for the final season.
