From the Vine with Simon Fell

From the Vine with Simon Fell
Simon Fell, winemaker at Thornbury Wines, talks us through his top picks.

What’s happening in the vineyards just now?

January and February are a very busy time. The vines are in full growth mode, building up their resources for when véraison arrives (when grapes ripen). I love this time of year; walking around the vineyards you can feel the energy and see the vineyard is full of life.

You have seven wines in the Thornbury range, which is your favourite?

I am really enjoying my Hawkes Bay Rosé right now. A lot of guys are beginning to appreciate rosé – it’s a cool trend we call “brosé”. Also, The Waipara Pinot Gris is a perfect drop at this time of year.

Advice for choosing wine?

Drink what you enjoy. There are great wines out there from New Zealand at every price point. For example, I love central Otago pinot noir. These wines show beautiful aromatics of spice, ripe cherry and plum and they also usually have more mouthfeel on the palate, which makes them a perfect match for a barbecue.

What’s next for Thornbury?

We are looking forward to rolling out new Waipara Riesling, which is going to be a sweeter, more mouth-filling style while still retaining the fresh, vibrant aromatics Waipara is renowned for.
