From The Treetops

Sweden is known for its innercity landscapes of contemporary architecture and design, but head out to the woods and you’ll find some even more incredible creations.

Set amid forest in northern Sweden, the eco-friendly Treehotel has been providing grown-up childhood escape fantasies since it opened in 2010.

Each of the property’s avant-garde treehouses is unique in design and layout, with the only commonality being their lofty perches above the pines. The newest addition to the portfolio is The 7th Room, conceptualised by Norwegian design studio Snøhetta and with custom lighting by ateljé Lyktan.

Approached from below, the room’s entire underside has been cleverly covered by a life-size photograph of the treetops, so the building “disappears” from view, leaving only the image of the forest as it looked before. Inside, panoramic windows and skylights face north to maximise viewing potential of the aurora borealis.

Even better is the outlook from the suite’s terrace, which is made of net. Lie face down and gaze to the forest floor or roll over and admire the starry sky.
