From ‘expensive brunette’ to babylights, subtle hair colour updates are trending

Want a change but not a chop? Good news. New hair colour trends are focusing on amplified natural colours, like your hair – only better.

It means you’ll be hearing a lot about ‘expensive brunette’, a deep and ultra glossy chocolate hue that’s currently trending everywhere thanks to a number of celebrities like Dove Cameron, Sofia Richie and even Kate Middleton.  It gets its name from the way it looks like one shade, but unlike a box dye that can often look flat, this hue is rich and dimensional. It shines with undertones that can be anything from warm caramel or cool espresso – something that is generally only achieved by accessing colouring expertise in-salon that doesn’t come cheap.

Babylights – or very finely woven highlights – is another subtle approach that can brighten up a wide range of hair colours. The beauty of the approach is that it throws flattering light onto the face without looking like you’ve had a lot done to your hair. They’re also a fairly low maintenance way to colour your hair as they grow out more naturally.

Golden tones have an illuminating brightness that looks slightly sun-kissed and their natural appearance has been earning them the colloquial term “playground highlights” for the way they hark back to the colour your hair would turn in summer naturally as a child.

“We are seeing a lot of warmth in blondes,” says Felicity Bruce, Joico ambassador and owner of Cocoon Hair Design.

“Demi-permanent lowlights of chocolate, caramel or peachy apricots are giving blondes a commitment-free change up! Bespoke looks of freehand colouring are where we will see more dimension.”

Warmth is also dominating bolder hues, like rich coffee browns and chocolate cherry.

“Vibrant colours are coming back, tips Bruce. “Especially the richer reds, coppers and mahogany.”

If you’re non-committal, a demi-permanent glossing colour brings intense shine, vibrancy and life to your usual shade.
