The major crackdown on gatherings will see the closure of venues such as pubs, clubs, sporting and religious venues.
Restaurants and cafes will be allowed to offer takeaways services, and Prime Minister Scott Morrison said it was safe to keep schools open.
However, NSW and Victoria have announced school closures and have advised parents to keep their kids at home.
In Victoria, the schools will close today with school holidays brought forward, while in NSW schools are only being kept open for families that have no other option.
The new national non-essential service closures were agreed to late on Sunday evening at National Cabinet – a meeting of the prime minister, state premiers and chief ministers.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison has criticised people who have crowded beaches or crammed into pubs and clubs over the weekend.
“When we all do not do the right thing, then it has real implications for others,” he said.
