Senator Says USA to Blame For Florida Shooting
A high school shooting in Florida has prompted US politicians to speak out about the need for change.

At least two people are dead and fourteen in hospital after a mass shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School in South Florida. The shooter, still unnamed, was a former student of the school. Broward Sheriff Scott Israel says the suspect, who is now in custody, is around 18 years old.

Nicole Baltzer, a senior at Stoneman Douglas said she heard multiple gunshots as the fire alarm went off and students began being evacuated. “I heard so many gunshots, at least like six. They were very close,” she told CNN.

US President Donald Trump has posted a message of support and sadness on Twitter: “My prayers and condolences to the families of the victims of the terrible Florida shooting. No child, teacher or anyone else should ever feel unsafe in an American school”.

While Florida’s Mayor Buddy Dyer called the incident “heartbreaking”, other politicians have highlighted the urgent need for change. “We are responsible for a level of mass atrocity that happens in this country with zero parallel anywhere else”, Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy wrote in an emotional appeal to lawmakers.
Bill de Blasio, Mayor of New York, condemned the number of shootings in recent months. “Heartbroken by the news from Florida. There have been at least 18 school shootings since 2018 began. Each one is a tragic reminder that it’s way past time for change”, he wrote.
