When Emilia Clarke started filming Emma Thompson’s Last Christmas, she was renovating her house. Each night after work, she would return home to a construction site for a few hours rest before a new day of filming.

When Thompson heard about Clarke’s living situation, she immediately moved her into her flat.

“She was like, ‘Darling, this is f*****g ridiculous. Come and stay with me,’” Clarke said. “So I did. I lived in a flat that Emma had [down the road] from her house for a lot of the filming. She used to make me dinner every night…. We would just have a martini, digest the day, and then maybe watch a little something or read the paper. Then I’d go home and the next day we’d drive in together.”

Know your own happiness

Thompson’s support doesn’t stop there. Self-love has increasingly been important to the actress as she’s learnt that to give yourself to other people, you must not forget to look after yourself.

“I didn’t just have to turn away from every single personal need—that it was okay to be selfish sometimes, and it was also okay to be angry. And that is all part of self-love, because it’s all part of accepting that you’re never going to be perfect. You’re never going to be normal, whatever that is, because it doesn’t exist. It’s a very dangerous concept. Everyone is infinitely various and infinitely complicated, and the sooner we get our minds around that… the better.” the star said.

Thompson is a lifelong environmentalist and tries to stay optimistic, having read that optimists live longer.

Even a friend to the Royals

Thompson revealed that she and Prince William “sniggered” at each other when she asked for a kiss when receiving her services to drama in 2019.

“I love Prince William, I’ve known him since he was little, and we just sniggered at each other,” she confessed. “I said, ‘I can’t kiss you, can I?’ And he said, ‘No don’t’!” She added: “If you’re first up you have to be more formal on such an occasion, but he’s looking wonderful and doing so well. He said, ‘This day isn’t about me, it’s about you’.”

Speaking about her friendship with both Prince William and Prince Harry, the actress continued: “It’s really lovely because I’ve always loved the boys and I’ve always been a long-term correspondent with their dad, it’s a very lovely feeling.”
