Duchess Kate wears face mask during emotional visit to baby charity
The Duchess was visiting a baby bank in Sheffield to help make boxes for families in need.

The Duchess of Cambridge stepped out in a mask, apron and gloves for the launch of a new initiative that supports vulnerable babies and families.

During her visit to a Sheffield baby bank charity Baby Basics UK, the Duchess said hearing the stories of families struggling during the pandemic had left her in tears.

“It can get very emotional,” she said. “I remember a couple of the families I met from King’s Lynn and I went home and literally burst into tears, their stories were so moving.”

“The struggles they have gone through, the bravery they have shown…in extraordinary circumstances. Helping their families through extraordinary times.”

Kate was wearing a reusable cotton floral face mask from London-based label Amaia to the meeting. It was the first time she has been seen in public wearing a face mask.

Face masks have been made mandatory in many UK settings, including on public transport, in supermarkets and stores, as well as banks and post offices.

Baby Banks are a crucial nationwide service, run by volunteers, helping to support some of the most vulnerable families in the UK by providing essentials such as nappies, clothing and bedding.

The Duchess has been a long-time advocate for supporting families in need through her charitable work.

Through the initiative, she persuaded nineteen brands to donate more than 10,000 items to Baby Basics, Little Village and AberNecessities, who operate more than 40 baby banks across the UK.

And her help didn’t stop there. The Duchess donned an apron and gloves to unpack the donations, including clothes and toys.
