DonateLife Week: a short video inspired by Gotye
Watch a touching short film about organ donation that doubles as a pop culture parody, inspired by a Gotye song.

The FilmLife Project is calling for budding filmmakers, creative changemakers and people touched by organ and tissue donation to learn about filmmaking for social good and submit a three minute piece to their short film competition.

Now in its third year, FilmLife offers free filmmaking workshops for people aged 16-28 years, and welcomes film entries for the short film competition from all ages. FilmLife brings creative energy to DonateLife Week, the national awareness week to promote organ and tissue donation in Australia, enabling aspiring filmmakers to encourage Australians to think about organ and tissue donation using visual storytelling.

The Organ and Tissue Authority has sponsored FilmLife since its inception in 2012 as part of DonateLife Week, the national awareness week to promote organ and tissue donation in Australia.

2013 winner, Brooke Huuskes, is a kidney transplant recipient who learnt filmmaking through the free FilmLife workshops. Her first film, a parody of the Gotye classic “Somebody that I used to know” has gained more than 50,000 views on YouTube and was announced winner of New Scientist Medical Masterpieces competition on 15 January 2014.

Brooke, who received Gotye’s blessing for the inspiring short film, enjoyed learning about making a film about organ and tissue donation.

Watch her video below, and read more about organ donation in the April issue of MiNDFOOD, on sale March 3 (NZ) and March 6 (AU).
