Century-old champagne recovered from shipwreck sells at auction
A rare bottle of champagne which sat at the bottom of the Baltic Sea in a shipwreck for more than 80 years has sold at an auction in New Zealand.

The 1907 Heidsieck & Co Monopole Goût Americain Champagne was already a collector’s item in itself, as it is often touted as the world’s most expensive champagne.

The bottle was recovered from the wreck of the Swedish schooner Jönköping in 1997, and is one of the 24 bottles originally sold by Christie’s (London) in October 1998.

The boat was carrying war material and a shipment of champagne and cognac en route to Russia when she was intercepted and sunk off the Finnish coast by a German U-boat in 1916.

Heidsieck Monopole Gout Americain 1907 is still available to buy but is rarely seen and is only available in tiny quantities.

The bottle was sold at The Wine Auction Room’s October sale on Tuesday night, after the auction house received interest from around the world.

The champagne will be remaining in New Zealand, with the successful bidder being a local buyer.
