A maximum category 10 typhoon hit Hong Kong and Macau yesterday, causing havoc in the Chinese city. The typhoon, named Hato after the Japanese word pigeon, is the first in five years to generate the city’s highest storm warning.
Five people are dead and over 150 injured due to falling objects and flooding caused by the typhoon. Two Macau residents are still missing. “It was the strongest and the scariest typhoon I have experienced in Macau,” local resident Lemos told the South China Morning Post. “I’ve never seen anything like this.”
Approximately 420 flights have been cancelled due to extreme winds, which reached 155km/h. Most schools and business have closed due to power outages and severe flooding, and thousands of residents in the southern provinces have been evacuated.
