Can a “Selfie” be Art?

Can a “Selfie” be Art?
Self-obsession or Self-expression?

The ‘selfie’ or self-portrait photo (often taken on a smartphone) is the new plague of our time. Everyone who owns a smartphone is now a photographer- the world, (or more often their portrait) is their subject. But can this modern trend be art? London’s Saatchi Gallery thinks so.

The Gallery has joined forces with company Huawei to offer artists, photographers and enthusiasts around the globe a chance to show their most creative selfies internationally, and have their work exhibited at The Saatchi Gallery as part of their #SaatchiSelfie competition.

This international competition offers a change to be part of a worldwide phenomenon and for entrants to express themselves, by exploring and advancing the creative potential of the selfie today. Entries must take the form of a photographic selfie. Entrants are encouraged to submit photos that are experimental and innovative and that take the selfie in exciting new directions.

The competition coincides with the launch of the Gallery’s new exhibition From Selfie to Self Expression. The exhibition opens from 31st March and runs to 30 May. The show will be the world’s first exhibition exploring the history of the selfie from Velazquez to the present day, while celebrating the truly creative potential of a form of expression often derided for its insanity.

The overall winner will be announced at the launch of the show at the Saatchi Gallery in London on 30th March 2017. For more information on the competition or exhibition, see the Saatchi Gallery website
