Busy Phillips shares the key to a successful relationship after a near-miss divorce

American actress, writer and chat show host, Busy Philipps is beloved by many for her candid honesty and no holds barred approach to life; so much so that she has amassed over 2million followers on Instagram, who tune in for a daily dose of everything from motherhood to trips to SoulCycle to front row seats at the Oscars.

Given her authentic and unashamed attitude towards sharing even the most mundane aspects of her day-to-day life, it thus came as little surprise to her fans that in her memoir, This Will Only Hurt a Little, Philipps openly wote about how she nearly divorced husband, writer and producer, Mark Silverstein, who she called ‘useless’ amid claims he ‘didn’t even try’ to hold their eldest daughter Birdie when she was born.

When Philipps recently sat down with Eve Rodsky, the author of ‘Fair Play’, to discuss emotional labor, how to build equitable partnerships, she explained that, “Many women wait until it’s too late. At that point their resentment is too high and their communication patterns are set.”

And while she admits in her memoir that she almost left Marc after feeling like she was ‘going to lose her mind’ from the pressures of being a mom, she too confesses with her signature candour that the troibles in her marriage led her to seek comfort elsewhere. ‘There was a man I was friends with, another dad. We’d been having lunch and stuff. Texting. Talking on the phone a lot. Honestly, I had a crush on him. I like him. Maybe I even loved him? He clearly liked me too.’

Thankfully, asking Silverstein for a divorce was the wake up call he needed to make important changes to the running of the household and the division of chores that had left the actress so unhappy. The former Dawson’s Creek actress revealed that Marc was ‘shocked’ and asked her to give him a chance to change. ‘Marc had recently had what I guess is called a breakthrough, and when I finally came clean about the other dude he was weirdly understanding about it.’
